Is there a time limit to a reading session?

Each reading session will last for 2 hours after which you will be redirected to the Library. A reminder prompt will be displayed on the screen ten minutes prior to the end of the 2-hour sitting. This time limit has been introduced to prevent users forgetting to logout of a title and thereby blocking access for other users for a long period of time.

If you wish to read the book again, you will have to re-login at the Library. After logging in, access to the book will depend upon the availability status of the book.

Top

What does 'status' of the book mean?

All the books in the online library catalogue are available for a one book per user read access. The status of a book means the availability of the book for reading.

There are five possible conditions:

  1. Available [You may read this title by clicking on the "Open and Read"]
This means that no user is reading the book and that the book is available for immediate reading.
  2. Available [The title is currently being read but you may book now for the next session]
This status means that the book is already being read but can be booked for the subsequent reading session.
Please note that there can be only 1 booking per title at any given time.
  3. Reserved [The title is being read and has already been booked for the next session]
The above status means that the book is being read and has also been booked for the succeeding reading session. You may try again later to check whether the book is available either for reading or for booking.
  4. Open Access [The title is available for reading only for mm mins]
Each reading session lasts for 2 hrs. If an existing reader ends the reading session before the stipulated 2hrs, then the book will be available for reading till the start of the next session. During this period the above status will be displayed.
Please note that you will able to read the book only for the displayed period of time.
  5. Reserved [The title is currently unavailable. Please check after mm minutes]
A reserved title will be on hold for a period of 30 minutes from the start of the session for the subsequent reader to access and read the book. During this period the Reserved status will be displayed. If the reader fails to access the reserved title within the 30 minutes, then the book will be released to the pool and the status will change to Free.

I have already booked a title and want to book another one. How do I go about it?

There can be only one reservation per book per reader. This means that you can only reserve one title at a time. Hence, if you have already reserved a title and want to reserve another one, you will have to replace the existing reservation with the new one.

To reserve another title, open the more info page of that title and click on the 'book now' link. When you click on the ‘book now’ link, you will be prompted to either cancel the existing reservation and replace it with the current selection or ignore the reservation. An email confirming the new/replaced reservation will be sent to you along with details of the reserved title and the reading session start time.

When I try to open a book in the DX Reader, the "Opening DX Reader in Library Mode" box opens and then freezes. What should I do?

You may have some kind of a pop-up blocker program installed on your browser like Pop-Up Stopper from Panicware (www.panicware.com), AdSubtract from Intermute (www.adsubtract.com) or the free Google toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) to name a few. These programs stop browser pop-ups that automatically appear on the screen without requiring an action on your part (e.g. a mouse click).

When you try to open a book in the DX Reader, the 'Opening DX Reader..,' pop-up appears before the actual Reader opens. This pop-up is used by our site to send your request to the DX Reader server. This is why, if you have the pop-up blocker enabled, the attempt to open the Reader is prematurely stopped.

If you have the Google Toolbar's pop-up blocker enabled on your browser then you can fix the problem in any of the following ways:

A. Add our site to the your pop-up blocker's 'whitelist'

  • Open our website in your browser.
  • Click the pop-up blocker button to add the site to your 'whitelist'.

The pop-up blocker will turn itself off when you visit this site.

B. Disable the pop-up blocker

  • Open the Toolbar Options window.
  • Clear the checkbox next to pop-up blocker in the Accessories section.

For more information on the Google Toolbar’s pop-up blocker feature, you may visit http://toolbar.google.com/popup_help.html.

DX Reader does not open in Windows XP, SP2, because pop-ups are blocked. How do I enable pop-ups in XP?

When you install SP2, the Pop-up Blocker is turned on in Internet Explorer and set to the medium setting, which means it will block most automatic pop-ups. The default settings for the pop-up blocker allow you to see pop-ups that are opened when you click a link or button on a Web site.

When you click to launch the DX Reader, the Pop-up Blocker will also play a sound and show the Information Bar that the pop-up is blocked. You can adjust these settings so that Pop-up Blocker works the way you want it to.

To change Pop-up Blocker settings

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings as in Fig 1.

Fig1: Pop-up Blocker Settings window

3. If you want to view all pop-ups, then click on Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
4. To allow only a particular site to display pop-ups, click on the Information Bar when it notifies you that a pop-up has been blocked as in Fig 2. Then click on Always Allow Pop-ups From This Site…. Then close the pop-up window and click on the link again. This will launch the DX Reader.

NOTE: To avoid further inconvenience, you are requested to turn off the pop-up blocker.
